Hi Jarl,
Unfortunately no, you cannot simply change your RingID to any string. However,
once you share your RingID with someone, you can add each other to your
contacts and can then simply call each other via your contacts list.

The RingID is a hash of your public key which is part of the public/private
keypair generated on your computer when you first create your account. This
keypair is used to identify you on the Ring Distributed Hash Table (DHT) and to
encrypt your communication.

You can find out more about public key cryptography and DHT on wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_hash_table

And some blog posts about how Ring works here:
http://ring.cx/en/news

You can think of this inconvenience as the price of having a distributed system
as opposed to having an account which is registered in someone's central server.

Subject: [Ring] Any text string as Ring ID?

Hi.

Just a quick question here:
I'm currently using Ring at home and I'm very happy with how well it performs
between my MacBook Pro and my Ubuntu Desktop insde my home.

Tried it. It worked. And I like it!

Now this is just me asking a dumb question and I have no real clue exactly how
this works at all but is it technically possible to change my own Ring ID in
any way?

Could, for example, the ID simply be my email address?
Or, could I simply enter * any * string of characters (or even my existing
phone number) as my own ID and then just go to my other machine and enter that
exact same string and, voilĂ  (!) get a connection?

Ring: edfec3ea3e42bd93c6231cc5add06a69719b59c2

So, this is my Ring ID at home (call it if you want) but it's kinda hard to put
down on a businesscard, tell my wife over the phone or even store in some
systems (because of the 40 character string length).

Thanks :)

Kind regards,
Jarl Arntzen
