To add on the previous technical reply by Stepan, my non-technical undestanding 
is that the 40-digit random string specification is also tied to the necessity 
to have as many possible combinations as requested by the Internet of Things 
exponential development: 16⁴⁰ = 1,461501637×10⁴⁸ uniques "hashes". 

Of course, technically, it would be possible to associate a human-friendly 
alias to your 40-digit unique device identifier (note that the identifier is 
linked to your device, not to your personal identity, and this means that you 
should have to list on your business card a unique ID for each of your 
devices). You could add a private Ring directory in your business 
infrastructure, for instance, linking your company's desktops, cell phones, 
tablets, production machines, etc, and use this server as a private bootstrap 
server. That's not a problem, But doing so on the public Internet would, of 
course, compromize your privacy. 

Please someone, correct me if I am wrong.
