I am just passing 1500 CD's now and it has taken about a year, not that I'm in any great hurry. :-)
I find that encoding to Flac 8 actually doesn't slow down the process very much at all. Probably depends upon your processor but my aging Pentium 4 2.5Ghz seems to be handling it well. The major time takers are finding and ripping dodgy sectors on the CD's and geeting the tagging correct.
