I've had the exact same issue with 6.5. I lost my various artist-only artists from the slimserver lists when I browse by artist.
Trying a variation on the last suggestion: I just edited the tags for a VA compilation so that for the Album Artist field the AA is now called "xx" instead of "various artists". Then, I browsed down through the music folder to the folder where this album's tracks are stored (a quick method to adding an album to the library without doing a lengthy rescan). Then (in slimserver), I go back to browsing by artist. sure enough, there's now an artist called "xx" with one album. Unfortunately, much of the info is wrong. Instead of there being 21 songs by 21 artists, it says "21 songs by 11 artists". When I click the album name to see the actual songs, only two of them appear in the list.
