Start with the basic technical realities. There are no quality differences between and among any lossless format. None. If it is lossless, it can be decompressed to exactly the same original bits. > Windows Media Player makes it so easy to rip (with Error Correction > enabled). > I know how to use EAC but it's more time consuming to use. EAC is one of many programs that can "rip" or extract music from CDs. And it can compress the music into any of a number of formats. I personally dislike EAC, I generally use CDex on Windows and grip on Linux. > Are there reasons to use FLAC over WMA lossless? > Sometimes I feel folks use FLAC simply because they are Anti Microsoft. Again, are you asking about the format? or the tool? There are serious philosophical differences between closed proprietary software and open source software and formats. Flac is free. It is open source. The initial "F" stands for free. In practical terms, there is nearly no practical difference between Apple's, or Microsoft's proprietary, and any other format. Today, neither Apple nor Microsoft's DRM have any teeth. But there is a serious concerns that Microsoft and Apple may implement more serious DRMs in the future. And worries that the more serious DRMs will have draconian terms. Some of these worries may even be justified. Apple sells great software on expensive hardware for a living. They want to keep selling software, and music is just software. Microsoft makes huge amounts of money selling software, they too have incentive to have DRMs protect software. If you use FLAC, you have no possibility that it will ever be not free. There are a number of tools for FLAC on many platforms.
