I just installed 2 Western Digital 500gb SATA drives into my 2+ year old 2.4 MHz P4, with a SATA PCI controller card. (The bare drives were only $150 each at TigerDirect.) I set-up a RAID 1 array, so I don't have to re-rip everything should a drive crash. I am still using my original 120gb PATA HD as my boot drive, so the big disks are only for my music files. There are no lights connected to the new drives to visually indicate read/write operations. I run Windows XP.
I found several set-up procedures on the web, and I think I set it up correctly, but I'm not sure. I did go through the bios (F4 key) set-up procedures, and install drivers for my controller card, which the PC says it sees. I know in a RAID 1 array, the PC really only lets you see one drive (I: in my case). When I went to format the drive(s), my PC said there was only one to format, which I did (in one big partition). I have 2 questions: (1) I assume both drives in the array were formatted, even though the PC only let me see one. Is this correct? (2) How do I verify that the mirror drive is actually working correctly, and contains my back-up music files? I understand if I had used an external HD, I could simply plug the external HD into another computer, but all my HDs are internal. Before I rip over 1000 CDs, I would like to verify that my RAID 1 array works correctly. Searches through other tech sites did not answer my questions.
