I'm hoping you've read the many threads in these forums on why RAID is
no substitute for a backup. I would _highly_ recommend that you use
the second drive for offline backup of your files instead of as a RAID
mirror. Get a decent USB or firewire enclosure for the drive and do
periodic backups. If your main drive fails, you'll be just as well off
- just replace the first drive with the backup one.

If you decide to continue down the RAID path, I recommend that you know
forwards and backwards exactly what you're doing. If you actually _do_
experience a drive failure there's a very good chance that you could
hose the data on the remaining good drive. I've seen it happen more
often than not. So before you begin ripping, put some test data on the
array and then break it by disconnecting one drive. And then see what
happens. Learn how to rebuild the array when you put a new drive back
into the degraded RAID array. See what software is available for
notification that the array has a bad drive - without it, you're worse
off than without RAID to begin with, since you'll never know when the
array is vulnerable.
