I rinsed the CD with water from the tap, and dried it with a soft towel. Now I could see that a huge area was now covered with fine scratches. Well, that's that, I thought; I'm going to have to buy a new one. But just to see how bad it could be, I put it into the PC drive and let EAC loose on it ...
... and to my surprise and delight, it read it! It wasn't error-free, but it recovered from them all and proclaimed the copies "OK". (AccurateRip said the CD wasn't in its DB, so I've nothing to go on there.) I've listened to the results, and they sound fine to me, no glaringly obvious glitches.
