Thanks for the experiment! That's what I was afraid of regarding the home-made solutions: it's hard to get the grit just right.
BTW with the commercial compound you have to rub -very- hard. More or less as hard as you can, and back and forth so vigourously that you create heat. Even then, a slight fogginess will remain.
