I am having the same problem!!! I prefer to have a few broad genres rather than 30 odd categories, and since quite a bit of my music is sourced from the "ether" I have categories like "chllout" and "Nederlandstalig"!!
I read the wiki, I read the forums, I used mp3tag to make sure all ID3.1 tags were gone. I double checked with WMP to make sure there were no odd genres and also with Godfather.
