My understand with MP3Gain was that if you used the Track/Album Analysis
button it would write APEv2 tags, but if you used the Track/Album Gain
button, it would physically alter the file.

I did intend to investigate that theory using a binary viewing tool but
never got round to it.

That said, after investigating this whole area a while ago, I switched
to Foobar for adding gain tags to both my MP3 and FLAC files safe in
the knowledge that it only uses tags (i.e. doesn't change the music
data).
