Is this your primary desktop system or a dedicated server?  Probably not
a lot of reasons to spend that much on upgrading a dedicated SlimServer
machine, even if you do use it to rip and encode.

But, if you're itching to upgrade your desktop rig, right now the E6600
may be the CPU to go with.  I think you're right about the energy usage
- the P4s were hot running power hogs.

For me, music encoding time would be pretty low on the list of
considerations.  When I rip a CD I encode only to flac, which takes
less time than it takes to rip the same track, even with an older
processor.  I encode to mp3 in the middle of the night, keeping a
parallel mp3 library.  That process can be as slow as it likes.

The cheapest route would be to find a used replacement motherboard off
of eBay or Craigslist.  Maybe the same model if you were happy with the
old one and feel the failure was unrelated to the quality, otherwise
some other brand/model.
