Can you see the ripping dialog window?  What's happening to the little
red squares?

If it's re-reading, you should see the squares light up in progression.
After all the squares are lit, the status window will show "Synch
error" or "Read error".

All the while, EAC will try to recover by slowing down the drive, so
re-reads will get slower and slower.  Once it reaches 0.1X, it'll be a
slow rip indeed.

Once you get a "Synch Error" or "Read Error", EAC has exhausted the
possibility of repair.  If you get enough errors in a row you'll hear a
pop or dropout.  Once I get an error like that I know there's no point
progressing.  I skip the track, try the other tracks and then repair
the disc:
