How did you tag tracks where you don't know the exact date? And what would you expect the _album_ date to be when the track release dates differ? I'd do some experimenting and find out exactly what is and isn't handled by SlimServer. I don't see a change to album/track dates from integer years to anything else happening without a lot of angst. Are plain years handled in the TDRC frame (i.e. 'yyyy') or is the TDRC frame completely ignored by SlimServer? Is another date format handled correctly - say, 'm/d/yyy'? For a fix in your situation, use a tagging program to copy the year portion of the TDRC to a TYER tag.
