It's a big question and one that's been discussed a few times before in
the past (I'll see if I can find a link to the threads I'm thinking
of).

IMO, there is a lot more scope for different views about how best to
use GENRE tags than (say) the ARTIST tag, where the info tends to be
right / wrong.

Speaking for myself, I rarely use the GENRE information supplied by
most electronic databases, but set it myself manually when ripping /
tagging.

To me, GENRE is an alternative way to browse your music that makes
sense to you. So it can be MusicType/Category/SubCategory or a mix of
all of these. If "70sPornSoundTrack" (one of my favourite ever
"automatic" genres added to my music) doesn't mean anything to me (and
believe me, it doesn't!) then it's a useless way for me to tag my
music.

However, "Ambient" and "Music to drift off to sleep to" are, so those
are the Genres I use.

A couple of practical points. If you have 1000 albums, you are looking
at a bit of work to retag. A number of tagging programs will
semi-automate the process (EasyTag will batch tag I think), but you'll
be doing a fair bit of the work. The simpler your structure, the
easier it will be to retag.

Slimserver supports multiple genres which is handy where music falls
into more than one category.

Also, if you think you will want to include or exclude Genres (useful
for things like the Random Mix) you may want to include Genres such as
Podcasts / Kid's Music / Mixes over 10 mins etc.
