I'm in the same situation as you are and six month have passed since I
began the task. I began with 150 discs in my slimserver and since them,
I'm improving the way I handle tags with this subset, not adding any new
album. I wrote several posts on this subject to talk about my
experience, tries and errors. This is not a ready to use howto, but you
can find some traps to avoid, some useful information.

To sum up:
- Try with a small part of your collection (including many genre), from
50-200 and adjust your methods by using it and analizing the pros and
cons of your choices
- Begin to install custombrowse/customscan and tag your collection
according to their behaviour
- Use only personnal tags that won't move in the time and use scripts
(definitive tool for me is MP3Tag, complex but very powerful).

Until I synthesize this in the wiki, you can find some of my posts
