Thanks for the information. Those are handy tips. With respect to my immediate problem, it's gone away after a restart and change of user account back to my main one. Perhaps it was a cache issue after all. There seems to be no more trace of the Cyrillic alphabets (not that I have anything against cyrillic alphabets- they look quite pretty - it's just that I can't read them)
