No it's not a horrible idea but it's not a very good one either. I don't think the average user wants to manually fill in database tables. Slimserver is - for a lot of users - still very geeky. Adding such functionality only adds to this feeling.
The concept of having the meta data seperated from the physical files is not very appealing. Even worse, a part of the metadata is in the files and another part isn't. IMO slimserver should read metadata only from tags and should do as much as possible transparent to the user, not needing any user intervention. You are used to working with databases and it shows in your solution.
