I appreciate the hesitation to separate the data from the files. On
the other hand, this is really only for the multi-contributor items and
is really meant as a last chance to fix up the data. IMO, "ARTIST=John
Smith;Jane Doe" and "ARTISTSORT=Smith John;Doe Jane" is messy and I
would imagine if I were that average Joe, I'd rather have a place to go
to see exactly how my artists are going to come up in a list.

I'm also not sure what the difference is between "manually filling in
database tables" (which they wouldn't ... I would assume some sort of
friendly UI) and doing what I would consider pretty tedious
multi-valued tags in Mp3tag or iTunes. And this requires setting the
data in all the files; even with the batch modification capabilities of
these tools, there is lots of room for error.

Of course, there is the big con to this with the separation aspect you
mentioned. It's indeed an issue if you want your music to be portable.
Personally, I don't need my music outside of this system. And the
music I do push out to my portable player would have a hard time of the
multi-artist tags, sorting or no. But I digress ... this *is* the geek
in me coming to a solution, which is admittedly not something most
users would embrace. I went ahead and tinkered with my own
installation and got it running ... sorta, with no UI; I still have to
fire up Access or MySQL Query Browser until I can piece together a more
usable web interface.
