Put the track back with no APE tags, rescanned, and I now have 33 tracks in my album, including the one that caused me all the trouble.
One odd thing - one of the APE tags was a track number, but that one WAS overridden by the standard ID2.3 tags... Ah well. Thanks again for all your input.
