Can I just add a note of caution here? Everybody is suggesting that you
use ReplayGain to equalise the loudness levels of your albums, and
that's fine - I use it myself.

HOWEVER... if an album is very quiet because it has a large dynamic
range, then what you'll probably end up with is a fairly large positive
ReplayGain value which if applied directly during playback could cause
the peaks in the album to be clipped.

Some media players understand this danger and take note of the "peak"
value as well as the "gain" value set by ReplayGain, and where
appropriate back off the amount of gain so that no clipping occurs.
Unfortunately at present the Squeezebox firmware does NOT do this. I
reported this as a bug some months ago
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5119), and the latest
update from Slim Devices is that they will take a look at it after 7.0
is released.

In the meantime I manually update the MySQL database to reduce the gain
settings accordingly where they would cause clipping. The SQL required
to do this is detailed in my bug report.
