thank you for your advices, I'm still just analysing this issue so it's
a good thing people point out possible problems at an early stage.

that gapless problem with alac is quite disturbing... it may be the
only reason I need to ditch itunes. bear in mind I need gapless only
when playing through the squeezebox duet. are you sure this doesn't
work? :S

Yes, I am a PC user. But, on the long run I might consider a mac for
several reasons. would I get gapless from alac then?
