Sorry, I was away from the boards for a while. Here's the lowdown on
tagging in AIFF, somewhat standardized, but many devices and programs
that read AIFF (like a CD player for instance) don't do anything with
these tags, they were originally intended for more pro applications.

The main difference with SoundCheck applied by iTunes is that
SoundCheck does not take album gain into account, and is not supported
by devices or programs outside of the Apple universe. There are 3rd
party utilities out there to convert Replay Gain to SoundCheck and vice
versa.
