I believe his suspicion is flat out wrong. If one wanted to do such a silly thing, you'd need a quality ADC to convert the output to digital. Or, if the Elite have SPDIF, he will need at least something to read/capture the SPDIF output. Depending on how 'old' the old Elite is, a $20 PC drive will be higher performing, faster and more accurate.
