I already gave part of the answer in an earlier post:

"My normal selection sequence for classical music is

Genre->Composer->Work->Artist (and if necessary, reissue version)."

More detail. For some Composers with a lot of works, I also use a
sub-genre tag as well:

Genre->Composer->Sub_Genre->Work->Artist (and if necessary, reissue
version).

Having a well tuned system for browsing my library relieves me of the
need to remember every CD I own. My player s/w can remember and I can
just browse to be reminded what choices I have. I don't want to type
anything to search, I just want to look at lists and pick from them.

I participated in the discussions that led to Ceejay's enhancement
requests. I think that his requests were a good description of
practical functionality for classical music. They aren't tied to a
single way of doing things and make SS/SB far more flexible.

I commend Erland for implementing his plug-ins. I think that that
functionality needs to be built into the server s/w and provided with a
complete point and click interface for setting up the choice of tags and
the construction of menus. (I'm out-of-date in using the plug-ins so I
don't know how far along they have progressed.)

I'd also like to see a web interface with a customizable set of browser
panes like iTunes. On the SB or the new controller, you can only view
one tag value at a time in a series of modes. That's all you can do
with limited display real estate. On a PC screen, you can view several
tag value lists in a modeless interface.

I did find one s/w player that was very well suited to browsing
Classical music: J. River Media Center 12. It can create and use
custom tags and database fields. I can use any of those fields in
iTunes like Browser panes. For a classical music view scheme, I use
Sub_Genre, Composer, Work, Artist and version panes. No compromise
there.

Foobar s/w also allows a choice of tags for browsing at the cost of a
lot of messing around.

The iPod is good enough for browsing a subset of my library. It
provides some useful browse sequences:

Genre->Artist->Album->Track for pop music, jazz, etc.
Artist->Album->Track

Composer->Album->Track    for classical music

This requires a bit of compromise. I combined all tracks of a
performance of a work into one file and converted from Flac to MP3. I
tag the resulting file as

Composer: composer
Album: work name
Artist: performer
Track:  work name_performer

So I am selecting the Artist when I select a track to play.

If I had bought some other portable player h/w, I would have relied on
browsing a file folder hierarchy.

You gave up too soon. See above.
