That's right. I tried earlier in this thread to talk about it, but it's like your plugin: there seems to be no interest for it from forum readers (It doesn't matter as I focus on this mostly for myself and it keep things easier to deal with). I was glad to read in this thread that people (at least two of them there) who are looking for an evolved way to tag music (be it classical, jazz listener, or even pop maniacs) handle their music collection in a way compatible with my approach: - A disc or a set of discs is stored in its own subfolder (or set of folder/subfolders) This "one (xml) file by album" design would work for them, even if the xml schema is generic and could fit a relationnal database. This approach permits meta information to survive: -file renaming, -folder moving, -database rescanning, -format conversion, -changing software, -etc. I think it would be a mistake to design a data schema for a specific need (specific tagging scheme, specific software/hardware, specific database or serialization format) as it would be doomed to die with the specific part it was designed for. The risk is to be too puristic, but looking back at the work done, I don't fear this risk anymore. On the "media file" identifier, musicbrainz ids are good, as they permit audio fingerprinting. That's a great thing for internet music database. For personnal media cataloging/identification, the md5 hash used by flac has my preference (it's directly available in flac header, it survives multiple taggings, it's not a proprietary solution as new musicbrainz fingerprints are, etc.). I just don't know if mp3 file has such an "audio data only" signature. Robin (the other) PS: I would be very very happy to see this thread turn into an effective one where ideas are shared and solution are discussed before being implemented instead of a flame or "discussion only" one (Dear Santa... ;) -- vrobin ------------------------------------------------------------------------ vrobin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11705 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43851 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
