Do I need smartgain on? Totally your choice. I use Replaygain, where I really like it is when I'm playing random or playlists using musicip because it keeps the volume in line so you don't have huge changes in volume between songs. You can still add replay gain anytime, I use dbpoweramp, but you can use other programs like foobar, mediamonkey etc.. Smartgain looks at what you are playing and if it sees a few tracks (not sure how many) from the same album it will use album gain from your tags, if it sees tracks from different albums it will use track gain. It won't do anything if you don't have replaygain tags.
