Why do you think there's greater FLEXIBILITY or PORTABILITY with FLAC? 
They should be almost EXACTLY the same size and bitrate as Apple
Lossless as FLAC is lossless, too.  Anything I rip from CD I do with
iTunes as Apple Lossless (ALAC), mainly because iTunes does tagging
very well.  If I need portability I re-encode from the ALAC files as
128kbps MP3 for my iPods.

I do encode some files to FLAC using MAX, but that's primarily when
taking a DTS or AC3 encoded 5.1 surround WAVE file and converting for
playback on the Transporter. The bitrate between WAVE and FLAC is the
same, but FLAC handles tags better than WAVE files do.
