Why do you think there's greater FLEXIBILITY or PORTABILITY with FLAC?
------------------------------------------------

I've been using iTunes/iPods all this while so ALAC has not presented
itself as a problem. But I am certain most of you who are in the same
boat must have (at one stage or another), felt like a hostage to Apple.
That's why I was seriously considering moving to an open standard like
FLAC.

================================================
If you change types.conf so that the file extension you use is
assocated with ALC type and not the MOV type. However if any file which
uses the same extension is a lossy compression - then it will not play
as it will be expected to be lossless.

Thanks BPA. It sounds like it could create more trouble than it is
worth, especially when I don't have much time to tinker nowadays.

================================================
You can start by selecting all tracks in your iTunes library and
converting them to AIFF. Your base tags will be preserved and you can
then throw a FLAC command line option at them to do the rest.

When done, delete all the AIFF and ALAC files.

Of course, you won't be able to use iTunes any more.
------------------------------------------------
I thought iTunes could play FLAC jaffacake but you are probably right.
If it means ditching iTunes altogether, I'll probably need to rethink
my move... Thanks for the procedure though.
