I merge tracks quite often. If you tell EAC to write out a cue sheet
(Actions > create cue sheet) the usual tipoff is that normal tracks
usually have 2 index points at the beginning of each track, index 00
and index 01. If index 00 is missing, the track may be a "gapless"
from the previous track. Or it may be that there's just a very short
quiet space from the previous track.

I've found it very useful to use a Sound Editor (I use Cool Edit) to
clean up track transitions by either combining tracks or moving the
index points slightly and possibly cleaning up the fade out/in when
necessary.

For instance, on the Moody Blues "Legend of a Mind", I joined "House of
Four Doors", "Legend of a Mind" and "House of Four Doors (reprise)" to
make a long track with the album "feel", but added an extra track at
the end of the album which was just "Legend of a Mind" alone.
