OK, the 'Group Compilation Albums Together' setting was on, but I also noticed that 'List Albums By All Artists For That Album' was set and 'Treat TPE2 MP3 Tag as Band' was set. So I changed both of these to 'List Albums by Band' and 'Treat TPE2 Tag as Album Artist'.
This prompted an automatic rescan, but once this had finished nothing had changed! The only place I can see Various Artists in the Music Folder, not under either Albums or Genre, which I'm sure I should be seeing.
