Using wav is a really really bad idea.

Yes you are imagining the difference.

Use a transcoder in squeeze center if you want it that bad. Use any
lossless format you want that supports tagging. Set compression the
lowest if you want to waste as much space as possible like wav. Then
setup the transcoder to convert to wav and it will use the most network
bandwidth like wav because it will be wav. But it will be wav on your
player.

Using iTunes is another bad idea (unless you buy music from itunes
store [which is another bad idea] or have an ipod).
