Why are you stuck with those? According to the WIKI, a typical squeezebox hardware (SB2 and newer) has various native formats, but neither ALAC nor WMA lossless are among them (one reason to look at FLAC). Unfortunately both Apple Lossless and WMA lossless are proprietary/closed formats so we're at the mercy of Apple or Microsoft! I don't know enough about the external transcoders required to give you information on which is easier on your server resources.
