I have read so many posts here, and on HydrogenAudio and Doom9, that my
head is spinning. From the posts I have read, I am reasonably sure it
is possible to do what I want but I cannot determine the steps to
accomplish my goal.

Here is my goal and the steps I have taken to this point;
- I have approximately 20 DVD-Audio discs that I want to enjoy in
5.1/24 bit/48 KHz (I have a SB Classic and a SBR, both connected to 5.1
systems via digital). I understand the Dolby Digital and DTS path but
the majority of my DVD-Audio discs do not have DD or DTS tracks.

- extracted a 24 bit/96 KHz/5.1 track (using DVD-Audio Explorer) to a
single WAV file.
- I converted this file, using dBpoweramp, to create a 24 bit/48
KHz/5.1 WAV file
- tried to play this file, in pass through mode (volume set to 100%
fixed), but it results in white noise from all speakers.
- both the files (96 & 48 KHz) play fine on two computers using WMP11,
albeit not verifying the 5.1 as there are just left and right
speakers.
- my SB Classic/SBR and receiver setup is correct for DTS and DD as I
downloaded some files from the Internet and they play fine.
- I extracted 6 mono WAV files (24 bit/96 KHz) from the DVD-Audio and
then converted them to 24 bit/48 KHz.
- these mono files play on a PC but only produce white noise through
the SBR/SB Classic

It seems to me that I need to encode the 24 bit/48 KHz/5.1 WAV file to
a AC3 or DTS file then run the spdifconvert program from user smst.
Before undertaking this step I thought I could get confirmation, or
redirection, from someone who has done what I am trying to do.

Thanks in advance for any help.
