Red Book still has encoding and checksums, it is just that it is aimed
at recovering close to the original audio when there is damage (but
only using the relatively primitive hardware that was available in the
first CD players), rather than the stuff on data CDs that is aimed at
recovering the extra data written or letting you know about it when it
isn't recovered completely.
