For tagging, you could use data from the 'MusicBrainz'
(http://musicbrainz.org/) database and use their 'Picard Tagger'
(http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardTagger). It’s written in Python
and works fine on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

For musical "fingerprinting", I’d recommend using MusicBrainz'
-PUIDs- (Picard does those for free) in combination with the 'MusicIP
Mixer' (http://musicip.com/mixer/index.jsp) or their -genpuid- tool.

For "first-stage" CD ripping, I also usually recommend using the
'MusicBrainz freedb Gateway'
(http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/FreeDBGateway) instead of freedb or
Gracenote. It has less releases, but much better data:

And of course you can always add your own entries or correct existing
ones.
