I have many cases where there are multiple artists I want to credit for
a single track. Where Pollini plays a Beethoven sonata, I would like to
credit both. Often the same group of artists should be credited for all
tracks of an album, but this is not always the case.

I am using ID3v2.3 tags for mp3 files, and WMA tags for WMA files. The
vast majority of my files are WMA.

Up to now, I have been creating multiple tags to credit multiple
artists, so for the album above, two Artist tags, one for Beethoven and
one for Pollini.

I have two issues.

First, I have read remarks in the Wikis and this forum to the effect
that it is inadvisable to use multiple tags of the same type. But the
main reason given seems to be that it bolluxes up the interpretation of
the SortOrder tag. However, I can't get the SortOrder tag to work with
mulitple artists anyway, when using a single tag and putting in multiple
artists with a separator. (That is, "Artist = Ludwig van
Beethoven;Maurizio Pollini" and "ArtistSortOrder = Beethoven, Ludwig
van;Pollini, Maurizio" results in Beethoven and Pollini being listed
separately in the Artists list but under L and M, not B and P.) Maybe
this is due to my using WMA tags, since this system has been reported to
work by others. Besides, SortOrder is not supported for AlbumArtist or
Composer, so it seems to be of limited value, attractive as it is
otherwise.

So the question is, if the above is right, whether there's any other
reason to avoid multiple tags of the same type. I've done a lot of it
already! Which would have to be reversed. And it's worked very well.

Second, as cdmackay complained in a post of 2009-03-18, however you
credit multiple artists, only one is displayed in the controller when a
song is playing. Of course, you can just select the song in the
controller to see a detailed listing of all artists, but it would be
nice if the Now Playing screen would list all artists, ditto for the
browse list of albums. Is there any way to make the controller do this
(as SC does)? Is there a solution for this problem?
