I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the problem was due to using WMA files. I was inthe same boat as you and couldn't get artistsort working successfully.
I have now bitten the bullet and moved to flac. It has some advantages and some disadvantages compared to wma but there is no doubt that it is much better supported by the squeezebox people. You could try converting a (copy of a) couple of your files to flac and see what you get. I get no problems with artistsort and all track artists are shown on the controller. If you do decide to convert, you can of course do it as a batch process - it will take time, but not a lot of effort.
