After about 3 hours of sorting through various issues, I finally found that splitting the mp3 into either FLAC or mp3 files works. It was mostly player issues I was running into. I did learn something about gapless playback though.
I'm going to stick with mp3 since the original is only in 192 kbit and I don't see the point in wasting the hdd space. I used Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2 which can split the mp3 based on a cue file, and does it at the frame level, so there is no re-encoding issues.
