In general, most people don't need cue sheets. In fact, I think they make adding FLAC tracks to SqueezeCenter more difficult - in the past it has cause the library scan to give incorrect results. So in the case of individual tracks, if I did have a .cue file I'd rename it to .cue.txt to keep it out of the way.
On the other hand, if you are anal, like me, and rip to FLAC images (a single file for the entire disc) then cue sheets are necessary. Talking about cue sheets is a bit like talking about abortion. People have their beliefs, and logic isn't going to change any minds. That said, here's a summary as I see it: Cons: - Cue sheets are a second class citizen in SqueezeCenter. Historically they haven't been supported as well, though these days it's pretty close, except for some tags not supported in .cue files. (For example, I had to modify CUE.pm to support ARTISTSORT and ALBUMSORT, and am looking at how to add artwork.) - If you have a portable device that plays FLAC, or just want to make copies of individual tracks, image + cue is a pain. That doesn't apply to me, because I'm going to transcode down to .mp3 and foobar handles cuesheets just fine. - People who don't understand the value of cue sheets will diss you. :) Pros: - I'm still fine-tuning how my music collection is tagged. I'm creating genres that are more personal to me, making names and titles more consistent, upgrading artwork, etc. I find this much easier with cue sheets. For example, I recently wrote a little script that went through and added ARTISTSORT and ALBUMSORT to all my cue sheets and it did eleven hundred albums in thirty seconds - across my home network. That would have taken a day if I were tagging the FLAC files. Also my increment backup was only a few MB. - Similar to the above, I have a few CDs where the track markers are just wrong. I have live albums where the intros for the next song are appended to the end of the previous track. My copy of Wish You Were Here has a track for Side A and a track for Side B. Do I want Rush's "2112" to be a single track or several? I can fix all this by editing a text file (the cue), as opposed to merging and re-splitting the FLAC files. In fact for case of 2112 (and some classical works), I can put the changed tracking in a copy of the cue sheet and now it's like I have two albums, one with the long piece and one with separate tracks.
