The sample frequency of CDs are 44.1kHz so the theoretical maximum
frequency they can record is 22.05kHz due to the 'Nyquist frequency'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_frequency). So yea something is
screwy with the direct sound windows component. I have a x-fi card too
and I turned off all effects also, I think most of the effects are
processed in the sound card x-fi DSP chip so it shouldn't affect the
direct sound recording but better to be safe.

The latest MP3 encoders have gotten pretty good and I can't really hear
any difference at 256k bit-rate or above. I stay far away from the MP3
debates. I am a perfectionist and just like the idea of storing data in
it's original bit-perfect form even if I do not own the equipment to
hear the difference. I buy a CD once, I rip the data in a lossless
format so I will always have the same quality recording I purchased.

I use the spectrum visualization in foobar2000 for quick peaking at
frequency cutoffs, I then go into a wav editor and load up a recording
to get an idea how an album was mastered. It is a same that everything
is mastered now to be as 'loud as possible'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war) but I am getting off the
subject.
