I know that with film soundtracks, people often claim the DTS track is
better. I don't know if there's something inherent in the format that
makes it so, or if it's simply capable of being better; I guess it's
always possible that somebody will do a shoddy job of encoding one and
not the other.

You're right, and although I've mentioned that somewhere in this
thread, the main instructions should say it. I've updated the first few
posts and the wiki page accordingly.

Using **.dts* is the preferred way to run it, in fact. Sometimes a DVD
chapter will not align perfectly with a DTS frame boundary, so a single
DTS frame will start in one extracted file and end in another. If the
files are processed separately, the utility will discard the incomplete
frame at the end of the first file, and skip past the junk (which has no
frame header) at the start of the second. If you process them all
together, the utility will save any partial frame from the end of a file
and try to match it with the start of the next file.

Sorry, I won't be much help with your other questions about audio
fidelity. My interest in this project was getting multichannel sound
out -- I doubt I'm capable of hearing the difference between recordings
with different sample rates or bit depth. :D
