I've just discovered a nice function in Squeezebox server which allows
multi tagging of tracks. I use itunes to rip and store music. Multiple
tags aren't supported by itunes as far as I can tell, but you can use a
delimiter in any of the artist fields (Artist, Album Artist, Sort
Artist, and Sort Album Artist) that will be identified by squeezebox
server. I chose ";" as the multitag delimiter.

So, let's take the example of the "Ring of Fire: The legend of Johnny
Cash", I don't treat this as a compilation, although in reality it is,
but as a Johnny Cash Album.

In itunes when ripped, the Album artist and sort fields are blank. One
of the cuts on this album is with U2, and another with Kris
Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

In Squeezebox Server you set the delimiter for multitags to ";".

In iTunes Set the album artist to Johnny Cash for the entire album, and
if you want the album to show up under "C" set sort album artist to
"Cash, Johnny", this will keep all the songs together (especially when
listing albums by year for an artist). With the multiple Artist songs,
set "Johnny Cash;U2" and in the sort artist field set "Cash, Johnny;U2".
Likewise for the song with Willie and the others set artist to "Johnny
Cash;Kris Kristofferson;Waylon Jennings;Willie Nelson" and set sort
artist to "Cash, Johnny;Kristofferson, Kris;Jennings, Waylon;Nelson,
Willie".

Tagged as above the songs featuring the other artists show up under the
other artists name when look through the squeeebox interface.

I haven't yet explored using this multiple tag delimiter for Classical
music, but it should cover the cases where you want to list by composer,
orchestra & conductor, all under artists.
