Would not 20bit flac be a more interesting experiment . I think it actually support 20bits
http://flac.sourceforge.net/format.html#frame see "Sample size in bits:" As squeezeboxes are supposed to support flac upp to 24/48 or 24/96 depending on hardware or up 24/96 software wise for all players . It might actually work, if it wont work you got much more traction for a bug report as flac is supposed to work.
