All my library is in FLAC at the moment. Works fine with my Vortexbox server. But given the virtually non-existent portability of FLAC files to mobile devices (esp the car) I'm thinking of converting to Apple Lossless. At the moment I'm forced to maintain a duplicate MP3 library for this purpose (more space, more backups etc). I know Media Monkey would be an answer as it can transcode (eg FLAC to MP3) on the fly for use in portable applications, but it's not available for Apple operating systems.
Question is, has anyone done this and have you noticed any differences in quality or usability ? I would assume that, both being lossless formats, in theory audio quality would be the same. But I've heard that FLAC is 'native' to the Squeezebox (I have SB3 and Touch). What does this mean ? Also does Apple lossless support hi-rez formats - my vinyl rips are in 24/96 FLAC.
