native would mean that the player can play the format, otherwise the server have to transcode. some formats are played directly on the player and some needs help by the server, wich formats depends on wich player you have. Touch has some native alac being implemented but it is buggy so it's turned of when you have a server. Older palyers do not have native alac suport and none is planned or possible, so a boom reciever or SB3 etc is suported by server transcoding
practically sbs would launch faad and flac to transcode, so you will se more server load. However if you computer is a modern one it can easily take the load, possible exception if you have a lot of players and all need transcoding of different streams some bugs with some alac files have been reported, esp hirez ? flac or mp3 is by far the most used and tested formats for sbs on all platforms, using more obscure formats increases the possiblity to encounter a bug. I think faad is a reverse enginered solution for alac. Apple is never very interested in suporting anything but iThings or iTunes. thats thier walled garden or honeytrapp ( I'm no better got myself an iPad thou I only have Linux pc's ) But you can try, take a backup and then batch transcode everything to alac let sbs scan that if it works your ok ?
