ah, it looks like I was using some arm of dbpoweramp that puts a context menu in windows explorer to edit tags...downloading latest mptag now. it seems persistent on every wav file I have though...no matter how many times I change and save the tags it reverts to FLAC as artist. hopefully mp3tag will overcome!
