Thats simple the spdif/toslink standard does not support more than 2 discrete pcm channels . Spdif/tos does up to 24/192 but only 2ch , the solution is to use some propriotary interface like the 3 spdif in parallell mhr interface my meridian gear use, or hdmi. Hdmi supports up to 8 discrete 24/192 pcm channels so there is actually no product at that can do this, hence using the DTS or DD route, it's an addon to the standard that you can transport dts or dd bitstreams on the spdif/tos . the problem is not technical merely a lack of comonly agreed standard and stupidity in the music industry. The music industry did all that they could to prevent SACD or DVDA players to output DIGITAL multichannel or plain 2ch in hirez ? ( go figure it's completely absurd ). Meridian, Denon and some others diy'd their own custom interfaces to do this anyway. You where actually suposed to interface your dvda/sacd player via analog outputs to your digital HT reciever or processor ? this " interface " was basically broken from day 1 ? And this they tried to sell ? It was only when blueray arrived we finally got HDMI to include hirez PCM multichannel, as a standard feature. -- Mnyb -------------------------------------------------------------------- Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
