If you've access to Linux or Mac you could automate the tagging process
for your entire library using musicbrainz or discogs (or both) as a tag
source and then review the proposed tags/ changes at a field, track or
album level before committing.  Would save you a whole lot of effort
compared to album by album tagging.

As far as tagging standards go you'd do well to heed JJZolx's advice.
