Did you run a full 'clear library' rescan, or just a 'new & changed' scan? It may be necessary to run the full scan if you haven't already done so.
If after a full scan you still have those artists appearing in the library, then yes, they're probably still in the tags. Did you say that you removed all 'ALBUMARTIST' (or 'ALBUM ARTIST') fields from the album? That's generally what you want to do with a compilation. I would include each artist in an ARTIST field and not leave any out.
